Apple has released macOS Sonoma, the most recent version of its Mac operating system, as a free software upgrade. The Cupertino-based business initially showed macOS Sonoma in June at WWDC23. To eligible Mac models, the current version of macOS delivers various UI changes, new screen savers, video conferencing tools, interactive widgets, and more. Support for macOS Sonoma is available on machines such as the iMac Pro model from 2017, the MacBook Pro from 2018 or later, and the Mac Mini from 2018 or later. Learn how to download and install macOS Sonoma on your Mac.

Following the introduction of iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 last week, Apple made the macOS Sonoma upgrade available to the public on Tuesday (September 26) as a free software update. These machines are compatible with the most recent operating system: iMac (2019 or later), iMac Pro (2017 or later), MacBook Air (2018 or later), MacBook Pro (2018 or later), Mac Pro (2019 or later), Mac Studio (2022 or later), and Mac Mini (2018 or later).

To upgrade your Mac, follow the instructions below:

  1. Launch the System Settings app on your supported machine.
  2. Head to General > Software Update and wait for the new version to appear.
  3. Click on Upgrade Now and Agree to the terms.

It is advised that users update their Mac models while they are plugged in. During the procedure, the machine may restart several times. The update improves widgets, allowing users to complete a reminder, play or pause media, access home controls, and execute a variety of actions right from the widget on their desktop. Additionally, iPhone owners will be able to personalize their Macs with widgets from their phones.

In macOS Sonoma, Apple has incorporated a new Game Mode option. It also has new video conferencing features that allow users to present and share their work from any video conference app. The video conferencing Presenter Overlay function allows users to add video to the chat while sharing their screen, whilst the Reactions tool allows users to add 3D-augmented reality effects to the screen such as hearts, confetti, fireworks, and more. In addition, the new macOS features upgrades to Safari, Siri, and Messages.
