Qualcomm introduced the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 as the company's newest flagship mobile chip earlier this week. The new chipset is expected to be used in flagship smartphones that will be released in the next weeks and months, beginning with the Xiaomi 14, which will be released in China on Thursday. According to Qualcomm, the new octa-core chip will boost performance by 30% and power efficiency by 20% over its predecessor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The chipmaker has already released benchmarks for the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, giving us an indication of how it compares to previous handsets.

Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 mobile CPU is an octa-core mobile processor featuring one Arm Cortex-X4 Prime core at 3.3GHz, three Cortex-A720 performance cores at 3.2GHz, two Cortex-A720 cores at 3GHz, and two Cortex-A520 efficiency cores at 2.3GHz. It is a 4nm CPU, as opposed to Apple's newest A17 Bionic chip, which is made using TSMC's 3nm manufacturing technology.

On the Geekbench 6 single-core benchmark test, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 scores between 2,320 and 2,229 points, according to the chipmaker. This statistic outperforms practically every other Android smartphone on the market today, including the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, OnePlus 11, and Google Pixel 8 Pro. Qualcomm's latest CPU, however, falls short of the iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Pro Max, which score roughly 2,600 and 2,900 points, respectively.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 gets between 7,439 and 7,526 points in the multi-core Geekbench 6 benchmark test. This puts the new smartphone chip ahead of the iPhone 15 Pro Max (about 7,200 points) and the iPhone 15 Plus (approximately 6,400 points). Other devices powered by last year's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 CPU had even lower multi-core benchmark results, falling well short of the 6,000 level.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 scored between 2.13 million and 2.14 million points in the AnTuTu benchmark test, which is higher than every single smartphone released with the Snapdragon Gen 2 chipset, including the iQoo 11 (16 million points), Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra (15.2 million points), Xiaomi 13 Pro (15.3 million points), and OnePlus 11 (15 million points).

It's worth mentioning that these test results come from Qualcomm's reference device, a smartphone equipped with the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 CPU, 24GB LPDDR5x RAM running at 4.8GHz, and 512GB of UFS 4 storage. The reference device sports a 6.65-inch full-HD (1,080x2,340 pixel) AMOLED display with a refresh rate of 144Hz and a battery capacity of 4,192mAh. More benchmarks from devices utilizing the new technology should be available in the coming weeks and months, beginning with the Xiaomi 14, which will be released in China on Thursday.
