On Tuesday, social media site X, formerly known as Twitter, announced a new subscription plan in which it would charge a $1 (approximately Rs. 83) yearly fee for basic capabilities.
The new "Not A Bot" subscription would charge users for likes, reposts, or citing other accounts' posts, as well as saving posts on the platform's online version.
The goal of implementing the new subscription model is to battle bots and spammers, according to X, who added that the charge will vary by nation dependent on the currency rate.
According to X, the new approach would be offered initially to customers in New Zealand and the Philippines.
Existing users are unaffected by this test. However, new users who do not choose to subscribe will only be allowed to access and read posts, watch videos, and follow accounts.
Bots have been a source of contention for Elon Musk, who purchased the firm last year. In July, X implemented a limit on tweet viewing in order "to ensure the authenticity" of its user base.
Reuters reported earlier this month, citing a source, that X CEO Linda Yaccarino met with X's lenders and stated that the business will test three tiers of its subscription service based on the quantity of adverts displayed to the customer.
Musk stated in August that X will remove a security feature that allows users to restrict other accounts. The block function on X lets a user to prevent particular accounts from contacting, seeing, or following them. "Block will be removed as a 'feature,' except for DMs," Musk stated in a platform post, referring to direct messaging. He stated that X will keep the mute function, which prevents a user from viewing certain accounts but, unlike blocking, does not notify the other account.
