Apple is preparing for its 'Scary Fast' event at the end of the month, where it is likely to unveil new MacBook Pro and iMac models. While numerous Mac models are due to be refurbished, the Cupertino, California-based computer behemoth may be working on major modifications to another popular product line. AirPods, Apple's massively successful range of truly wireless stereo (TWS) headphones, are apparently in line for a "end-to-end" redesign, with fresh upgrades due to arrive across the board.
According to Mark Gurman of Blomberg, Apple is planning a new version of its entry-level AirPods for 2024, followed by a new AirPods Pro in 2025. Apple is working on a new earbud design, a redesigned style for the cases, and audio quality improvements for both devices. In addition, the firm plans to release a new version of the top-tier $549 (Rs. 59,900 in India) AirPods Max headphones next year.
According to the source, Apple reportedly intends to retire the second and third generation AirPods later next year. These will be replaced with two unique fourth-generation AirPods, which will allegedly be priced similarly to their predecessors, but will show more distinction. According to Gurman, the higher-priced version of the fourth-generation AirPods would have the Pro model's active noise canceling capability as well as an upgraded charging case. The two devices will also have a new design with shorter stems, similar to the earlier AirPods and AirPods Pro.
Apple now sells a pair of second-generation AirPods for Rs. 12,900 and a third-generation AirPod for Rs. 19,900, with little difference between the two devices. Then there's the AirPods Pro 2nd Generation, which costs Rs. 24,900. At its 'Wonderlust' event in September, Apple upgraded the Pro model by adding a USB Type-C port to the casing, replacing the Lightning port.
As Apple progresses away from the Lightning socket, all new AirPods models, including the upcoming AirPods Max, will have USB Type-C charging. The iPhone 15 series, the company's most recent smartphone range, debuted this month with USB Type-C connections, finally putting an end to the controversial Lightning port, which debuted with the iPhone 5 in 2012.
