Samsung Electronics has been pushing for local manufacturing in India, where it produces its formidable smartphone portfolio. Now, the South Korean technological firm appears to be planning to manufacture computers in India as well. According to reports, Samsung expects to begin laptop production next month, delivering a boost to the government's Make in India initiative. Electronic firms are increasingly shifting away from China and establishing operations in India due to the allure of incentives.
According to a Mint article, Samsung has added a new laptop production facility to its Greater Noida factory, which makes mobile phones. This new plant is apparently capable of producing 60,000 to 70,000 laptops each year.
According to an unidentified insider, the new unit will begin operations next month. According to the source, producing 60,000 to 70,000 laptops each year requires an investment of between Rs. 100 and Rs. 200 crore.
The news comes after the Indian government established a license requirement for laptop, tablet, and personal computer imports last month. The new import limits on electronics are intended to stimulate indigenous production, particularly as ties between India and China and China and the West deteriorate. At the time of the announcement, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, said on X that the new rule would ensure India's tech eco-system uses "trusted and verified systems only that are imported and/or domestically manufactured trusted systems/products."
In May, the government authorized a Rs. 17,000 crore incentive to stimulate domestic production of IT devices like as tablets and laptops. The output Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme 2.0, which includes laptops, tablets, all-in-one PCs, servers, and ultra-small form factor gadgets, is expected to create Rs. 3.35 lakh crore in incremental output over a six-year period.
"The budgetary outlay for IT PLI is Rs. 17,000 crore." "We will accept the first set of applications by October," IT and Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated following the Cabinet meeting.
Following the news, it was revealed that Samsung and Apple were interested in expanding local electronics manufacture in India. "We've had considerable success and tailwinds in the smartphone segment and we have increased interest from the likes of Apple and Samsung in expanding and growing here," Chandrasekhar told Bloomberg. "We want to essentially replay that and add to that."
However, not everything has gone smoothly for Samsung in India. The business was apparently battling to collect industrial incentives that it claimed the Indian government owed it early this year. Samsung India was believed to be demanding approximately Rs. 900 crore in incentives for the fiscal year ending March 2021, with the government only willing to grant Rs. 165 crore unless the South Korean conglomerate could offer supporting documentation.
