Last week, Apple released iOS 17, bringing significant updates to the company's operating system for recent iPhone models. However, the Cupertino business is allegedly examining customer accusations that the iOS 17 upgrade reset several privacy settings at the operating system level. According to security researchers, the two settings on iOS 17 that are said to be impacted by the upgrade might jeopardize users' privacy since they contain location information.

Apple acknowledged to 9to5Mac that it was looking into a problem with the iOS 17 upgrade reported by two cybersecurity researchers known as Mysk on X (previously Twitter). According to Mysk, certain iOS 17 users have noticed that the iOS 17 upgrade unlocks the Significant Locations and iPhone Analytics settings in the Settings app, which were previously disabled on iOS 16.

Mysk highlighted in a post on X that both Significant Locations and iPhone analytics keep track of a user's location information. The former is saved on a user's smartphone and synchronized between devices using end-to-end encryption, which prevents Apple from accessing the data. iPhone Analytics, on the other hand, generates analytics reports for Apple that may contain location information, even if anonymized.

Aside from several individuals responding to Mysk's post on X saying that the options were enabled on their iPhone, Gadgets 360 was able to confirm that both previously disabled settings on iOS 16 appear to have been enabled following the upgrade to iOS 17.

Both of these options may be manually removed again by opening the iOS options app and selecting Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services > Turn off Significant Locations and iPhone Analytics.
