Due to above-threshold radiation levels, Apple must cease selling its iPhone 12 model in France, France's junior minister for the digital economy told the daily Le Parisien in an interview published on Tuesday.

According to Jean-Noel Barrot of the newspaper, France's radiation authority ANFR notified Apple of its intention to block iPhone 12 sales after conducting tests that revealed the smartphone's Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) was slightly higher than legally permitted.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.

Barrot stated that a software update would be sufficient to address the radiation risks associated with the phone, which has been on the market since 2020.

"Apple is expected to respond within two weeks," he added, adding that "if they do not, I am prepared to order a recall of all iPhone 12s in circulation." The regulation applies to everyone, including the internet behemoths."

According to scientific research, the European Union has established safety limits for SAR values associated with mobile phone radiation, which may raise the risk of some types of cancer.

The French watchdog will now inform regulators in other EU member states of its findings. "In practice, this decision could have a snowball effect," Barrot warned.

France expanded legislation in 2020 to require stores to show the radiation value of items on packaging, including tablets and other electronic gadgets, in addition to mobile phones.
