According to analytics company Similarweb, OpenAI's ChatGPT, the enormously popular artificial intelligence chatbot debuted in November, had monthly website traffic fall for the third month in a row in August, however there are hints the slide is coming to an end.
In August, worldwide desktop and mobile website visits to the ChatGPT website fell by 3.2 percent to 1.43 billion, following declines of about 10% in each of the previous two months. Since March, the amount of time visitors spend on the website has been decreasing monthly, from an average of 8.7 minutes on site to 7 minutes on site in August.
However, August's worldwide unique visitors increased from 180 million to 180.5 million.
The return of school in September may boost ChatGPT traffic and usage, and some schools have begun to embrace it. US ChatGPT traffic increased somewhat in August, coinciding with the return of American schools.
"Students looking for homework help appear to be part of the story: the percentage of younger users of the website dropped over the summer and is now starting to rebound," said David F. Carr of Similarweb, who analyzes ChatGPT and its competitors on a regular basis.
ChatGPT sparked a frenzy of generative AI use in daily tasks ranging from editing to coding, reaching 100 million monthly active users two months after its inception. Generative AI technology leverages previous data to generate new material, such as articles or poetry.
Prior to the debut of Meta's Threads, it was the fastest-growing consumer application ever, and it is currently one of the top 30 websites in the world.
This year has seen the development of a number ChatGPT rivals, including Google's Bard chatbot. Bing, Microsoft's search engine, also offers a free OpenAI-powered chatbot.
In May, OpenAI also developed the ChatGPT iOS app, which may detract from visits to its website. ChatGPT is free to use, but a premium subscription costs $20 (about Rs. 1,665) each month.
Aside from ChatGPT, OpenAI generates revenue through offering direct access to its AI models to developers and corporations, as well as through a relationship with Microsoft, which has invested more than $10 billion (approximately Rs. 83,15,000 crore) in the firm.
