To foster innovation and collaboration in next-generation wireless technologies, the Department of Telecommunications has formed the Bharat 6G Alliance.
Bharat 6G Alliance (B6GA) is a forum for collaboration comprised of public and commercial corporations, academics, research institutes, and standards development organisations.
Mobile services have evolved from 2G to 3G to 4G to 5G, and now 6G is on the horizon.
Notably, telecom service providers in India began offering high-speed 5G services in October 2022. In August 2022, the government issued spectrum allocation letters to telecom service providers, instructing them to prepare for the country's 5G launch.
The Department of Telecom received bids totaling Rs. 1.50 lakh crore from the 5G spectrum auction.
The telecommunications industry is constantly developing, with significant technology obsolescence. It has witnessed the shift from wire-line to mobile services.
Union Minister for Communications, Electronics, and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw unveiled the Bharat 6G Alliance on Monday. The Bharat 6G Alliance website has also been created.
The government claims that the Bharat 6G Alliance will form alliances and synergies with other 6G Global Alliances. Its major goal is to identify the corporate and societal demands of 6G beyond technical requirements, establish consensus on these needs, and support high-impact open R&D efforts. B6GA's goal is to bring together Indian entrepreneurs, businesses, and the manufacturing ecosystem to form consortia that will drive the design, development, and implementation of 6G technologies in India.
In his remarks on the occasion, Minister Vaishnaw stated that in the last nine years, a series of reforms have been implemented for the telecom industry as a sunrise sector. He went on to say that the rest of the world is following India's technological lead.
He stated that over the last nine years, data costs have decreased from Rs. 300 per GB in 2014 to Rs. 10 per GB in 2023.
Furthermore, he stated that as a result of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the United States, both nations will co-create technology, and the transformation will be beneficial to "Developed India."
