Google is working on introducing a new 'Undo' button to its Android keyboard GBoard, which will help users type better by restoring erased text. According to rumours, GBoard will gain a new 'Undo' button that would function similarly to desktop operating systems. The functionality is presently being tested and is included in the most recent GBoard beta version, but it is unclear when it will be made accessible to the general public.
9to5 was the first to report on this.According to developer rkbdi (provided by Akos Paha), the feature is now active in the next GBoard beta, but has been disabled. The functionality is expected to show in the overflow buttons in GBoard's Settings. However, because Google has provided the opportunity to personalise what users see in this overflow menu, it may be moved up a level, making it slightly simpler to reach. Of course, its ultimate implementation might look very different and more user-friendly and accessible.
What it accomplishes is that, like other desktop operating systems, the new button on the virtual keyboard will purportedly let users to execute a "Control+Z" or "Command+Z" operation, which effectively undoes things and can bring back erased text that was just written into a text field. The similar effect was demonstrated in the video example, with the user merely selecting the 'Undo' option from the overflow menu to restore text that had just been written in but subsequently removed.
According to 9to5Google, the search engine giant is apparently introducing this feature systemwide, which means it will work pretty much anyplace you can text with GBoard. This might be from a text box in the search bar or from a third-party app, as long as the GBoard app is set as the primary keyboard.
While the GBoard 'Undo' button is new, the undo feature is not. Google has included undo and redo buttons in most of its Workspace products, including its Keep note-taking app.
Google released a new and customizable toolbar earlier this year. This allows users to personalise the toolbar that displays above the keyboard by dragging and dropping the functions they need and use the most from the overflow menu. Users may also delete the voice typing microphone button from the toolbar if they didn't need it.
