Microsoft President Brad Smith reiterated to a Brussels audience on Thursday the merits of regulating artificial intelligence and how the US software giant can assist, echoing a message he made in Washington last month.

Smith, along with Twitter founder and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, has pushed to court regulators and politicians with demands for AI regulation, a topic that has sparked widespread public interest since the release of Microsoft-backed OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Big Tech has contributed ideas on how to effectively govern AI, which might assist to mitigate the effects of such restrictions on their businesses.

The European Union is finalising the provisions of the AI Act, a worldwide first that might serve as a model for other countries.

"Our intention is to offer constructive contributions to help inform the work that lies ahead," Smith said in a blog post. He later repeated his statement at a meeting in Brussels.

He stated that Microsoft's five-point roadmap for managing AI, which includes government-led AI safety regulations, safety brakes for AI systems that operate key infrastructure, and assuring academic access to AI, fits with the proposed legislation from the EU.

Smith also asked the EU, US, G7 nations, India, and Indonesia to collaborate on AI governance in accordance with their common values and principles.
