Amazon and Flipkart have been asked to join India's digital public infrastructure Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), according to T Koshi, the network's Chief Executive Officer.
In an interview with ANI, Koshi stated that they were invited and welcomed to the network.
"They are seriously considering (ONDC), and we believe that whenever they feel comfortable with their current scale and size of the operation and system, they will seriously consider it." However, they have not yet merged. "They made some statements about their participation and intent," Koshi told ANI.
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) formed ONDC as a non-profit organisation to foster open e-commerce.
The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) aims to promote open source networks for everybody to exchange products and services over the internet, and it is platform-independent.
ONDC, which will be incorporated on December 31, 2021, goes beyond the present platform-centric digital commerce paradigm in which the buyer and seller must utilise the same platform or application in order to be digitally visible and conduct a commercial transaction.
India has created some of the best digital public goods infrastructure in the world, and the next in line might be its Open Network for Digital Commerce, which is presently in its early stages of adoption. Jan Dhan, Aadhar, and CoWin are instances of how India has followed the road of establishing public digital infrastructure to serve citizens and UPI.
ONDC operations began in January with only 40 transactions per day, but have since grown to over 30,000 for products and 50,000 for services.
He further stated that the platform is garnering attention from both large and small retailers.
"We're seeing that now that we have much more control over the transaction's terms and conditions, as well as much better pricing and costing in this network." They have begun to announce several unique schemes for clients who come to open networks for digital commerce. We expect that type of movement will begin in the coming months as merchants realise the flexibility that democratisation provides."
Currently, it is mostly comprised of grocery and food goods merchants, but beauty, fashion, personal care products, and electronics, among others, are progressively coming in and going live on the site.
